In the world of Hermès, knowledge is currency - and leather is where it all begins ...

We all understand the importance of making money work for us. What most people do not realize is that a handbag - when chosen correctly - can quietly outperform traditional assets just by sitting in our closet. Hermès does'nt just elevate your style. It builds wealth. Like any serious investment, it is essential to have the field knowledge to achieve the maximum return on investment. When it comes to parking your money in the House of Hermès, one factor determines everything. Leather !

Leather dictates desirability, liquidity, and long-term value in the secondary markets.

SCARCITY AS STRATEGY

The House of Hermès is well known for its unique designs and craftsmanship - tailored with functional aesthetics - crafting classic and timeless pieces that can be passed on to generations. The brand needed more than just longevity, but solid strategy to transform from a luxury brand into an asset class.

In the 1980s, the house avoided mass production, reinforcing limited availability across core designs. What followed was not just demand - but obsession !

Access became selected and purchase became client relationship based. Collectors were even more enticed to purchase seasonal and limited editions to add it to their collections.

This suddenly drove their resale value in the secondary market, making the success of Hermès not by accident but a genius strategy.

FIRST : UNDERSTAND SILHOUETTES

Every Hermès bag is built on one of two constructions - and the same leather behaves differently depending on the construction.

Sellier : Formal looking bags

Exterior stitching | Sharper Edges | Rigid

Retourné : Relaxed looking bags

Interior Stitching | Subtle Flexibility | Softer Structure

GRAINY LEATHERS

TAURILLON CLÈMENCE

Taurillon Clèmence, or simply Clèmence or TC, is chosen when structure is secondary to character. No two TC Bags ever look the same, each one becomes unique to its owner, reflecting your personality and giving off an effortless chic. It is commonly seen in the Retourné style, complementing its natural slouch. Most people prefer the slouch of Clèmence in larger bags, but I personally love the Picotin and Evelyne styles - practical for daily errands.

Investment Perspective

On-Demand Colors - Noir (Black), Etoupe, Gold, Craie, Tangerine, Bougainvillea.

Popular Bag Forms - Picotin 18, Picotin 22, Birkin 25, Birkin 30, Birkin 35, Evelyne

The combination of durability, relaxed slouch, and everyday usability makes this leather a consistent performer. A standout in the resale market is the Birkin 30 in Noir with gold hardware, often valued around ~$20,000 USD

TOGO

Togo is the definition of practicality and durability without sacrificing performance. It is a modern classic—softer than Epsom, yet stiffer than Clèmence, which makes it well-balanced. It is commonly seen in the Retourne style and rarely in Sellier cuts. My favorite is the Togo Birkin 30 and how well it wears over time—it rarely shows signs of usage, which adds to its everyday appeal and a perfect bag for work.

Investment Perspective

On-Demand Colors - Gold, Noir (Black), Etoupe, Bleu Jean, Bleu Nuit, Rough H, Raisin

Popular Bags - Kelly 32, Birkin 25, Birkin 30, Birkin 35, Shoulder Birkin 42.

The practicality of Togo makes it one of the most liquid leather in the secondary market. A Birkin 25 in Gold on Gold hardware is a strong performer, reselling around ~$32,000 USD

CHÈVRE

Chèvre is chosen for its lightweight feel, and vivid color expression. It is the interior lining used on both Birkin and Kelly bags, which already indicates how impressively scratch-resistant the leather is. There are different variations of Chèvre, but Chèvre Mysore is the most commonly used. You will notice that many collectors opt special orders in Chèvre—customizing the handles and sangles in different colors. It works especially well here because of how beautifully the leather absorbs and reflects color with a subtle sheen.

Investment Perspective

On-Demand Colors - Fuchsia, Rose Sakura, Noir (Black), Rose Texas, Orange, Bleu Hydra, Bleu Royal, Dore, Magnolia.

Popular Bags - Mini Kelly, Kelly 25, Kelly 28, Kelly Cut, Birkin 30, Geta, Mini Verrou 16, Mini Constance

Chèvre is valued for its balance of durability and structure, especially for smaller formats. Special order Mini Kelly pieces perform particularly well—for example, Mini Kelly in Nata and Noir with Palladium hardware can resell around ~$28,000 USD

EMBOSSED LEATHERS

EPSOM

Epsom is chosen for its sharp, defined and crisp structure—the kind that holds its shape almost forever. It is a lightweight leather, easy to clean and maintain, which makes it an ideal entry point for first-time buyers stepping into Hermès. The leather reflects color in a dynamic and graphic way. I think most people would agree that Epsom is best suited for Kelly style bags, espically Kelly 25 in Sellier cuts—it complements the clean, defined lines, instantly elevates your outfit and gives a polished put together look without much effort.

Investment Perspective

On-Demand Colors - Noir (Black), Etoupe, Gold, Bleu Indigo, Bleu Du Nord, Rouge Casaque, Chai, Malachite

Popular Bags - Mini Kelly, Kelly 25, Kelly 28, Kelly Pochette Clutch, Birkin 25, Birkin 30, Constance 24, Kelly Doll Picton (Special Edition )

Epsom remains highly desirable in the secondary market for its rigidity and ability to hold shape over time. A Sellier Kelly 25 in Noir - Black with Gold hardware typically resells around ~$26,000 USD

VEAU MADAME

Madame is known for its lightweight feel, soft to touch, and subtle lustrous sheen. It is most often seen in Sellier cuts, particularly in Birkin and Kelly formats, where it enhances the clean, structured silhouette. At first glance, it looks similar to Epsom. However unlike Epsom, Madame is a stamped leather, which gives it a classic aesthetic without strong rigidity. This balance makes it feel more refined and elegant. One of my favorites is the Kelly Elan—which has a delicate, sophisticated look, especially in deeper jewel tones, making it ideal for events.

Investment Perspective

On-Demand Colors - Gold, Noir (Black), Etoupe, Deep Bleu, Rouge De Coeur, Graphite, Rouge H, Moka

Popular Bags - Kelly Elan, Mini Kelly, Kelly 25, Kelly 28, Birkin 25, Birkin 30

Veau Madame bags are relatively rare and highly coveted among collectors adding to their appeal. A Kelly 25 in Moka with Gold hardware typically resells for around ~$26,000 USD in the secondary market.

SMOOTH LEATHERS

SWIFT

Swift is a semi-matte, soft, and supple leather that allows the color to take center stage. It adapts easily to your lifestyle, softening and molding over time in a way that feels very personal and lived-in look—so proper stuffing does make a difference. When paired with the right colors, it can be striking and collectible. Another advantage is that minor scratches can often be reduced by gently wiping. I personally prefer it in larger bags, especially for travel, since it fits a lot and carriers relaxed structure well.

Investment Perspective

On-Demand Colors - Noir (Black), Rose Sakura, Rouge Casaque, Gold, Jaune Poussin, Nata, Vert Vertigo, Bleu Jean, Rose Azalee, Rose Confetti.

Popular Bags - Kelly pochette, Kelly 25, Kelly 32, Birkin 25, Birkin 30, Mini Lindy, Mini Constance 18

Swift leans more towards visual appeal than pure investment. Resale tends to be more condition-driven, but well-maintained pieces still hold strong value. For example, a Birkin 30 in Bleu Jean with Palladium hardware typically resells around ~$25,000 USD

BOX

Box is chosen to honor heritage. It has a glossy, smooth finish that instantly gives a vintage feel. Box was used by Hermès for its iconic Birkin for Jane Birkin, which is part of what makes the leather so special. Although it scratches easily and shows water marks, I believe that these scratches and small chips add character. Over time develops a deep, elegant patina—the kind that tells a story collectors truly appreciate. It is most often seen in Sellier cuts, but I also find Box in Retourne cuts very appealing—still looking elevated. There's something about Box leather that feels so iconic—it was actually this leather that drew me into Hermès aesthetics.

Investment Perspective

On-Demand Colors - Noir (Black), Rouge H, Bleu Abysse, Rouge Vif, Vert Foncé,

Bleu de Prusse

Popular Bags : Mini Kelly, Kelly 28, Birkin 25, Birkin 30, Birkin 35, Constance 18, Constance 23, Constance 24, Constance-To-Go wallet.

A true Hermès collector usually wants at least one Box leather piece in their collection. One of my favourite examples is a special edition Mini Kelly Clouté with Palladium Hardware, which can resell for around ~$40,000—making it both a statement piece and an exceptional event bag

BARENIA

One of the first things you can notice about Barenia is its rich distinctive scent which is honestly an addictive fragrance. It is one of the heritage leathers of Hermès, historically linked to its equestrian roots and saddle-making. Barenia changes beautifully with age, developing a deep patina—think of it as a smoother version of Togo, but has far more character over time. Although part of its charm is its constant evolution, this definitely is not a leather for someone who prefer their bag to preserve it's look. In my opinion, one of the chicest ways to use Barenia is to making custom pieces with a combination of handles, sangles and flaps in Barenia and body with Toile—giving it a heritage-inspired elegance and vintage appeal.

Investment Perspective

On-Demand Colors : Fauve, Ebene

Popular Bags : Birkin 25, Kelly 25, Mini Lindy, Evelyne

Collectors adore Barenia's heritage status. It is difficult to maintain in near-new condition so tying a scarf around the handles helps preserve the leather and maintain long-term value. A Birkin 25 in Fauve Barenia Faubourg typically resells around ~$23,000 USD

EVERCOLOR

Evercolor is known for its subtle grains and soft satin sheen—giving it a very modern look. It was initially used for smaller leather goods before eventually becoming a staple in bags because of its durability and vibrant color payoff. The texture sits somewhere between Epsom and Swift—offering more softness than Epsom, while still holding shape better than Swift. Like many softer leathers, it develops beautiful dimples and gentle dents. I personally love Evercolor in more relaxed silhouettes like the Shoulder Birkin in a pop of color. It works particularly well if you are looking for something less rigid but still polished.

Investment Perspective

On-Demand Colors : White, Gold, Bleu Navy, Etoupe, Bleu Nuit, Rouge Tomate, Rouge Casaque, Jaune Poussin, Gris Misty, Rose Azalée, Bleu Jean

Popular Bags: Kelly 28, Kelly 32, Kelly 24/24 21, Mini Jypsière, Roulis Slim Wallet, Mini Roulis 18, Roulis 23, Lindy 26, Constance 18, Constance 24, Birkin 30, Shoulder Birkin 29

Evercolor is relatively less common than more mainstrem Hermès leathers, which adds to its appeal for collectors looking for something slightly different. One of my adored styles is the Shoulder Birkin 29 in Etoupe with Gold Hardware, typically resells around ~$24,000 USD

TADELAKT

Tadelakt is often confused with Box leather as it shares a similar smooth feel and glossy finish. In many ways, it feels like a contemporary version of Box. It is smooth to touch, structured, and holds its shape exceptionally well. While water can still cause blistering, Tadelakt is generally less prone to scratching than Box, and minor scratches can often be buffed out more easily. It is most commonly seen in Sellier cuts, where the clean structure of the leather stands out. I personally like Tadelakt in a structured Kelly 28, especially in lighter pastel shades - it gives off a rich, formal look while still feeling slightly modern.

Investment Perspective

On-Demand Colors: Noir (Black), Capucine, Biscuit, Etoupe, Rouge Vif, Rose Lipstick, Bleu Electrique.

Popular Bags: Mini Kelly, Kelly 25, Kelly 28, Constance 18, Birkin 25, Birkin 30

Adored by more informed collectors, Tadelakt is appreciated as modern and a practical alternative to Box leather. One of the most sought-after combinations is a Kelly 28 in Rouge Vif with Gold hardware, which typically resells for around ~$15,000 USD.

EXOTICS

Warning !! You will face a hard time going back to normal leathers once you have experienced the exotics.

OSTRICH

Ostrich is one of the most recognizable and durable exotic leathers. It is also one of the oldest exotics used by Hermès, dating back to the early 20th century. Instantly recognizable by its signature follicle pattern, Ostrich leather is produced in a matte finish and gradually develops a beautiful patina, becoming slightly shinier with age. Despite being an exotic leather, Ostrich leather is surprisingly durable and often handles daily wear better than you expect. I personally prefer Ostrich in smaller bags, particularly in the Constance style and darker tones.

Investment Perspective

On-demand colors : Noir (Black), Rouge Vif, Vanille, Fuchsia, Rouge H, Orange, Sesame, Ebene, Rose Bubblegum, Gris Perle, Bleu Mykonos, Rose Tyrien, Nata, Bougainvillea.

Popular Bags: Birkin 25, Birkin 30, Mini Kelly, Kelly 25, Kelly Elan, Constance 18, Constance 24, Picotin 18, Picotin 22, Mini Lindy 20, Lindy 26, Lindy 30

Ostrich continues to perform strongly in the secondary market for its durability, recognizable appearance, and collector appeal. A Mini Kelly Rouge H Ostrich with Palladium hardware typically resells for around ~$38,000 USD

ALLIGATOR

Alligator is one of the most sought-after exotic skins, known for its exceptional color saturation and refined appearance. It is available in both Matte and Shiny (Lisse) finishes, each offering a very different aesthetics. Often mistaken for crocodiles, one of the easiest ways to identify Alligator is by the square mark next to the Hermès stamp. Because alligators are naturally smaller than crocodiles, tends to be found more frequently in smaller bags. What I particularly like about Alligator is its versatility. Whether in a neutral or vibrant shade, the leather always gives a sophisticated and refined look that feels elegant rather than seasonal.

Investment Perspective

On-Demand Colors: Noir (Black), Rouge H, Bleu Électrique, Bleu Marine, Vert D'Eau, Beton, Mauve Pale, Malachite, Bougainvillea, Gold, Bleu Encre.

Popular Bags: Kelly Pochette, Mini Kelly, Kelly 25, Kelly 32, Birkin 25, Birkin 30, Constance 18, Picotin 18, Constance 24

The more symmetrical and evenly distributed the scales are, the more desirable and valuable the piece. Alligator offers a high-risk, high-reward investment profile with exceptional resale performance driven by rarity, exclusivity, and collector demand. One of my most desirable pieces is a Kelly Pochette in Matte Alligator Noir with Gold Hardware, which typically resells for around ~$64,000 USD

CROCODILE

Crocodile is the epitome of visibility, class, and elegance. Crocodile leather can be identified by the smaller pores visible within each scale—a feature not found in Alligator. Whether in Matte or Shiny (Lisse) finish, crocodile leather showcases color beautifully, with each finish presenting the same shade in a completely different way. For many Hermès enthusiasts, owning a crocodile piece is an aspiration and often a milestone in their collection. I personally prefer it for its more uniform and larger scales, especially on larger bags where the symmetry creates a truly stunning appearance. The most iconic example remains the Himalayan Birkin, with exceptional pieces achieving resale prices approaching seven figures

Investment Perspective

On-Demand Colors: White, Chocolate, Noir (Black), Fuchsia, Geranium, Burgundy, Fauve, Gold, Electric Bleu, Rouge Braise, Bordeaux.

Popular Bags: Birkin 25, Birkin 35, Mini Kelly, Kelly Cut, Kelly 32,

It commands attention while remaining incredibly elegant, which is why collectors continue to gravitate towards it regardless of the price. Crocodile offers one of the strongest collector-driven investment profiles within Hermès ecosystem, supported by rarity, craftsmanship, and sustained demand. A Birkin 25 in Bordeaux Shiny Crocodile with Gold hardware typically resells around ~$85,000 USD

LIZARD

The popularity of lizard comes from its unique balance of craftsmanship, rarity, and elegance. Unlike many exotics leathers, its natural surface is carefully buffed to create a beautiful sheen rather than being heavily coated, resulting in a lustrous finish that can last for decades when cared properly. The enduring appeal of Hermès Lizard bags, particularly Kelly styles, has secured their place as timeless icons within the world of luxury fashion. Hermés maintains exceptionally strict standards for Lizards skins, which is one of the reasons they are most commonly produced in smaller bag formats. Among all the exotics, it has a quiet sophistication that appeals to collectors who appreciate subtle artistry over obvious displays of luxury.

Investment Perspective

On-Demand Colors: Ombre, Noir (Black), Bougainvillea, Tangerine Orange, Rouge De Coeur, Bleu Saphir, Fuschia, Rouge Exotique, Vert Cypress.

Popular Bags : Mini Kelly, Kelly Elan, Constance 18, Constance 24, Constance Elan, Mini Roulis 18, Kelly Pochette, Birkin 25

In recent years, demand has continued to rise, with prices following a similar trajectory. A Mini Kelly in Niloticus Lizard in Bleu Saphir with Gold Hardware typically resells for around ~$52,000 USD.

MY FINAL THOUGHT

The intention of this blog post is to reframe the narrative around Hermès - an investment category often misunderstood and dismissed as niche or "women-centric". In reality, Hermès bags have quietly established themselves as high-performing assets, in many cases outperforming traditional investment vehicles such as stocks and bonds over the past three decades. If you are entering the world of Hermès for the first time - or refining your collection understand this : Leather > Color > Trend

The ideal bag, is not defined by trends, but by how seamlessly it integrates into your budget, your typical needs, and your lifestyle. Much like wealth—created through intentional choices tailored to individual financial goals, your values and longevity.

In the end, a well-chosen Hermès bag is not merely an accessory - it is an asset.
